Tottenham Hotspur will be seen by many as a decent choice to go all the way in the Europa League this season. They will come up against Dinamo Zagreb in the first of their round of 16 legs on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur have been improving with every passing game at present, and they will certainly be considered a leading chance to win the Europa League given that they are managed by Jose Mourinho, who has an excellent recent record in this competition. The Portuguese manager won this very competition with Manchester United, and he could once again be looking to use the tournament as a route into the Champions League next season. Spurs have been in excellent form in the Europa League, and they sailed through their challenge in the previous round, as they beat Wolfsberg 8-1 on aggregate. Spurs won the away game 4-1, before picking up a more emphatic 4-0 win in the return game. Gareth Bale was among the scorers in that game, and the Welshman has now scored five goals in four games.
Dinamo Zagreb will be a much more difficult opponent for Spurs than they faced in the previous round. The Croatian side produced an excellent display in the last round, as they managed to overcome the stern challenge in the form of Krasnodar. The Croatian side won 3-2 away from home, before seeing off their opponents 1-0 in the return game back at their home stadium. Zagreb dominated the return game against the Russian side, as Mislav Orsic scored the only goal. They controlled the game excellently well in that fixture, as they limited their opponents to just two shots on goal despite having just 37% of the possession. However, it will be a much bigger challenge this week against Spurs.
Spurs have only played Dinamo Zagreb on one previous occasion, and that meeting took place over ten years ago. That meeting came during the 2008-09 season in the Europa League, as Spurs picked up a comfortable 4-0 win.
Zagreb are in excellent form, as they have won their last six in European competition. However, this will be their hardest challenge to date, and we can only see a win for the home side being the outcome in the first leg.
