Spurs’ campaign this season is gradually in danger due to their series of negative results lately. The injury of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and currently Steve Bergwjin really put Jose Mourinho in difficulty to deploy the best formation. This weekend, his reputation is on the line while hosting his former team, The Red Devils. The visitor’s side’s form has been improving since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and is now aiming the Champions League spot next season. It is certainly a tight clash since both need to seal three points.
Hugo Lloris and Co were still unable to win in the previous matches. They were held in a 1-1 draw by Burnley. Spurs were conceded at the first half as Chris Wood found the back of the net. Unfortunately, they could only equalise by Delle Alli’s penalty at the second half. In UCL, their campaign is officially over as they failed to progress to quarter-final after being trashed by RB Leipzig 0-3. Marcel Sabitzer’s brace and Emil Forsberg’s goal ended Mourinho’s men hope to go further.
Meanwhile, Manchester United is going stronger and stronger lately. They managed to dismantle their noisy neighbour, Manchester City, once again this season by two goals to nil. Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay scored the winning goals.
Jose Mourinho needs to employ a different formation or tactical approach so that it will not be easily anticipated by Manchester United. With some key figures on the sideline, he could opt for 4-3-2-1 as the 3-4-2-1 one seems to be a total failure. Serge Aurier and Jan Vertonghen will be given a role as the wing-back and Toby Alderweireld can be accompanied by Eric Dier as the centre back.
In the midfield, Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli are the best options to filter or even stop Solskajer’s men attack and more importantly close down Bruno Fernandes so that he will have less control of the ball. Then, on the attacking midfielder, Erik Lamela will be the number 10 player to support Giovanni Lo Celso as the false nine, the role he used to have in Real Betis, and Lucas Moura.
Solskajer is likely to opt for 4-3-3 formation with a possible transition to 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2 if necessary with a more pragmatic approach. He relies on the tight marking as well as closing down in the penalty box followed by the swift counter-attack.
In Mourinho’s current available squad, Delle Alli is the key figure recently since he was given a role as a false nine, which unfortunately has not been effective. Giovani Lo Celso should be taking such role instead as he was familiar with this position in Real Betis.
Solskjaer’s men have been applauding their new blood this year, the Portuguese international, Bruno Fernandes with three goals and three assists in all competition so far. Moreover, due to Rashford’s absence, Anthony Martial is the current main scorer along with the promising youngster, Mason Greenwood who has netted five goals in EPL so far.
Taking over the club in the middle of the season is always challenging. Such is the situation Mourinho has to deal with now. If Spurs fail to be in the Champions League spot at the end of this season, it might cost his reputation as a winner. Therefore, he will strive for a victory in this upcoming match for his own sake and future. Only proper and stunning tactics would save his future in North London. Yet, winning against The Reds Devils today is never easy. A draw might be an ideal result.
Playing at their home turf does not make Spurs a favourite. They are only projected to win at 3.40. In contrast, Harry MacGuire and Co’s win market is at 2.25. Meanwhile, the draw result is at the value of 3.55.
