The main competition gets underway at the Women’s World Cup on Saturday, as the round of 16 begins. Spain will be looking to become the first nation to book their spot in the quarterfinal stage, but they will come up against a Switzerland side that topped Group A.
The round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup gets underway on Saturday, and there will be a clash between two European rivals in the first match in the stage of the competition. Spain remain one of the leading contenders to win the tournament this summer, and their chances have been aided after their 4-0 loss against Japan to finish second in the group standings.
Spain now face a slightly easier passage through the knockout rounds, but they will need to bounce back after a poor showing against Japan. This is Spain’s second appearance in the round of 16 stage at the Women’s World Cup. Their previous appearance at this stage came in 2019, as they put up a strong showing against the United States, before suffering a 2-1 defeat.
Switzerland managed to top Group A in the opening stage of the competition, but their performance levels will certainly need to improve. The Swiss were held to back-to-back 0-0 draws against Norway and New Zealand after winning their opening match against the Philippines.
Switzerland are unbeaten at the World Cup this summer, which is a huge improvement on their previous record, as they had lost three of their last four matches in the 2015 tournament. The Swiss are also yet to concede at the tournament this summer, despite having faced more shots on goal in the 2023 edition of the competition than in the 2015 tournament.
This will be the first time that Spain and Switzerland have clashed at the Women’s World Cup, The previous encounter between the sides came back in 2019 during the Algarve Cup, with Spain registering a 2-0 win.
The Swiss have done well to reach this stage of the competition, but they were unadventurous in their matches against New Zealand and Norway in the group stage. They will likely need to play more on the front foot in this match, and that could play into the hands of Spain, who look great value to reach the last eight.
