The battle to be crowned Olympic champions reaches its conclusion in the early hours of Friday morning, as Sweden look to win their second gold at the Games this summer. However, Canada will also be in good confidence after knocking out the world champions in the previous round.
Few sides have been as impressive as Sweden throughout the Olympic Games to this point. They have been near faultless throughout the competition, and have won every single game that they have played. Shockwaves were sent across the competition in the first round of fixtures, as they dismantled the American side 3-0 to open their campaign. That was followed up with routine wins over Australia and New Zealand, scoring six goals and conceding just twice. Their relentless charge to the gold medal continued in the quarterfinals, as they beat Japan 3-1 to set up a showdown with Australia. Sweden made no mistake making it through to the final, as Fridolina Roflo scored the only goal of the game. They will be hoping to go one better in this Olympics, after claiming silver five yeas ago.
Canada have grown into the tournament every time that they have taken to the pitch. They started the group stages with a 1-1 draw against Japan, before claiming a first win against Chile. Canada were held for a second time in three games in their final group game, as they played out a 1-1 draw against Team GB. Belief continued to grow in the quarterfinals of the competition, as they overcame a talented Brazilian side with a penalty shootout success. However, their biggest came in the semi-final, as they beat the USA for the first time in ten years. Jessie Fleming scored the only goal of the game from the spot, as the belief within the team grew.
This will be the second meeting between Canada and Sweden, and the first at the Olympics. Canada managed to get a draw in the first meeting between the nations in the Algarve Cup in 2019, but were beaten by Sweden in the World Cup just a couple of months later.
Canada have been excellent in the knockout rounds at the Olympics. However, Sweden have been on another level compared to the other nations. They look to have an excellent chance of winning a second gold medal for their nation in the women’s football.
