The race for a place in next season’s Bundesliga continues later this week, as two of the sleeping giants in Germany clash in the playoffs. Stuttgart will have home advantage in the first leg, as they look to cement their place in the top tier.
Nothing comes close to the tension that is found in the relegation playoff in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart fans will be ready for the test this season, as they finished 16th in the overall Bundesliga standings. They ended the season with a draw, which extended their unbeaten streak in the top-flight to three matches. However, wins were hard to come by throughout the regular season, as they landed just seven victories from 34 matches.
No side in the Bundesliga picked up fewer wins, while draws were a recurring issue throughout the campaign. Stuttgart were held to 12 draws throughout the season, which was the joint-most of any side in the Bundesliga. However, their recent performances have been solid, which will give them an enhanced chance this week.
Hamburg’s season ended in dramatic fashion, as they were denied automatic promotion on the final day following Heidenheim’s victory. The German giants have been stranded in the second tier since suffering relegation for the first time in their 55-year history in 2017-18. Since then, they have failed to gain promotion, losing in the playoff last season against Hertha Berlin.
But, they come into this year’s playoffs with renewed hope, as they have gone four matches without defeat in 2. Bundesliga. That includes a run of three straight victories across the final three matchdays. Their most recent win was a narrow 1-0 victory on the road against Sandhausen on Sunday afternoon.
Stuttgart has landed victories in each of their previous two matches against Hamburg, with their most recent victory coming in the form of a 2-1 win in 2019. Hamburg hasn’t won away from home against Stuttgart in five attempts, with their most recent win in Stuttgart coming in the form of a 1-0 win in the Bundesliga in 2013.
Hamburg will need to recover quickly after narrowly missing out on an automatic promotion spot in dramatic fashion. The pressure will be on in this away fixture, especially considering their poor record in Stuttgart. However, we expect a cagey clash between the sides, with a draw being the most likely outcome.
