Two sides with a lot to play for will lock horns in the Bundesliga this weekend. Borussia Dortmund will be chasing a second straight win to keep pace with Bayern Munich, while Stuttgart will also be chasing a second straight success to edge out of the bottom three.
This promises to be a huge game in the context of the seasons of both of these sides. Borussia Dortmund remain second in the Bundesliga standings, but they are just two points away from Bayer Munich coming into this weekend’s matches. The German giants have won three of their last five, and recovered from their defeat against Bayern last weekend with a fine 2-1 home win against Union Berlin.
That victory over Union was their tenth victory from their previous 12 matches since the winter break. Since the break, Dortmund has accumulated 31 points from a possible 36, which is the highest of any side in the German top-flight. But, Dortmund has only averaged fewer points against Bayern than they have against Stuttgart.
Stuttgart also still has a lot to play for this season, as they sit in the relegation playoff spot at this late stage of the season. They are three points from safety coming into this weekend, meaning a victory could lift them up to 15th. However, only Schalke has picked up more victories than the hosts this weekend.
Over their previous five matches, Stuttgart has picked up just a single victory. At home, they come into this showdown after losing each of their last two. They haven’t lost three consecutive home matches since 2021-22. This weekend, they will also be looking to win back-to-back games in all competitions for the second time this season.
Dortmund has won their last four matches against Stuttgart. However, that is the first time in history that they have won that many consecutive matches against this weekend’s arrivals. But, Dortmund does fare well in away games against Stuttgart after winning on 16 previous trips, and seven of their last eight.
Dortmund’s recent run against Stuttgart is much more encouraging than their historical record. Therefore, we will be siding with Dortmund to maintain their excellent run of form since the international break against Stuttgart this weekend with a 2-0 win on the road.
