Bayern Munich moved back to the top of the Bundesliga standings in stunning fashion last weekend, and they will be bidding to maintain that momentum on the road against Stuttgart on Saturday. The hosts will be looking for a return to winning ways after suffering a defeat in their previous fixture.
Bayern Munich answered any doubts surrounding their title credentials emphatically last weekend, as they cruised to success against Union Berlin. It was a strong response by the defending champions after losing their previous fixture, but they remain locked in a fight with Borussia Dortmund coming into this weekend, with just goal difference separating the sides.
However, Bayern’s performance against Union was ominous for the rest of the teams in the league, as they hammered their shell-shocked title rivals, and didn’t allow Union to have a single shot on target. The game was taken away from the capital club within the space of the final 15 minutes of the first half. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting opened the scoring, before Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala added further goals before the half-time break.
Stuttgart is still fighting for their lives in the Bundesliga this term, as they sit 15th in the current standings. They are just outside of the relegation places on goal difference, and they come into this fixture having picked up just one victory from their previous five matches.
However, they weren’t able to record a second straight victory in their previous match, as they were beaten on the road by Schalke. Stuttgart found themselves 2-0 down at the break in that fixture, but despite a late push for an equalising goal, Born Sosa’s effort with half an hour counted for very little in the great scheme of things.
Bayern Munich has picked up 23 wins from the previous 28 meetings between these sides across all competitions. However, the German champions are without a win in their previous two matches against Stuttgart, with both fixtures ending in 2-2 draws at the Allianz Arena. But, Bayern were 5-0 winners on their latest trip to Stuttgart.
Stuttgart looked short of confidence in their defeat against Schalke last weekend, and that doesn’t bode well for their chances this weekend. We struggle to see anything other than a straightforward victory for Bayern Munich on Saturday.
