Lyon kick off their 2023-24 season on the road on Sunday, as they look to improve following a disappointing campaign last term. Strasbourg will also be hoping for a more comfortable season after finishing just above the relegation spots in 2022-23.
Things need to improve for Lyon this season, as they were below their typical high standards throughout 2022-23. Overall, they finished seventh, meaning that they missed out on a place in Europe. However, this appears to be the dawn of a new era at the club, as it will be their first ever season under American Josh Textor. A lot will be expected from the team, but a return to a European competition is the bare minimum.
Investment has been made in the team throughout the season, as they have brought in Skelly Alvero and Clinto Mata from Sochaux and Club Brugge, respectively. Meanwhile, they have raided Premier League clubs with the additions of Duje Caleta-Car and Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Southampton and Arsenal, respectively. However, a lot of quality has also left the club, including Houssem Aouar and Moussa Dembele.
Strasbourg had a near miss in Ligue 1 last term, as they narrowly avoided relegation to the second tier. They finished 15th in the overall standings, but finished just five points above the drop zone. They won just nine of their 38 matches. However, they had a clear threat in the final third throughout the season, netting 51 times.
Therefore, if they can assess defensive issues this term, then we would expect them to rise up the Ligue 1 standings. Patrick Vieira was appointed as the new head coach in the summer, and he has splashed the cash on the arrivals of Abakar Sylla and Emanuel Emegha for a combined total of over £40 million.
Lyon landed a 2-1 win in the previous clash between these two sides, while Strasbourg landed success in the other match between the teams last term. However, Lyon has lost just once in ten previous matches against Strasbourg.
Lyon don’t appear to have done enough during the off-season to bridge the gap on the European spots, and they could be set to struggle this term. Therefore, a chance is taken on Strasbourg to give Vieira the perfect start this weekend.
