The quarterfinals get underway at the Women’s World Cup this week, as the final four will be determined. Spain and the Netherlands lock horns in an eye-catching showdown in the early hours of Friday morning, but can the Dutch continue their progression and reach a second straight semi-final at the competition?
Spain remains among the front-runners in the betting to win the Women’s World Cup this summer. Great confidence would have been taken from their performance in the round of 16, as they were able to bounce back from a stunning 4-0 loss against Japan on matchday three in Group C. The defeat meant that Spain finished second in the group, and they came up against Switzerland in the first knockout round.
However, the European nation was back to their brilliant best Down Under, with Aitana Bonmati at the heart of everything positive from Spain. The nation’s star performer netted twice in the opening 36 minutes, before second half efforts were scored by Laia Codina and Jennifer Hermoso. The victory means that Spain will be competing at the quarterfinal stage at the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
Netherlands have also progressed through the tournament with ease to this point. The Dutch finished above the USA to claim top spot in Group E following victories over Portugal and Vietnam. However, they were forced to remain patient in the round of 16 against a well-drilled South African outfit. Jill Roord scored the opening goal, before the win was secured by Lineth Beerensteyn with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The victory extended their excellent record at the Women’s World Cup, as they have now lost just once in their last eleven matches at the competition. They have also kept clean sheets in five of their last seven matches at the tournament.
This will be the eleventh clash between the two European nations. Spain holds the overall advantage, as they have won five of the previous encounters compared to the two victories landed by the Dutch.
This will be a very tight quarterfinal showdown at the Women’s World Cup. However, we will be siding with Spain, who look to have more quality in the final third of the field. They have also won five of their ten showdowns against the Dutch.
