The two sides stuck on zero points in Group H at the Women’s World Cup lock horns on Sunday in Adelaide. Both South Korea and Morocco will need to kickstart their campaign with a win this weekend if they are to have any hope of progression through to the knockout round.
Morocco will need to bounce back quickly after suffering a heavy defeat in their first match at the Women’s World Cup. They scored two own goals in a huge 6-0 loss against Germany to open Group H, and they likely paid the price for trying to go toe-to-toe with one of the most dominant nations in the history of the tournament. Germany scored twice in the first half, before they seized control quickly in the second with two more goals in the opening ten minutes after the break.
The defeat saw Morocco become the eleventh nation since the 2019 edition of the World Cup to lose their debut match. In fact, six of the eight African debutants have suffered a loss in their first ever match at the competition.
Things weren’t much better for South Korea in their opening match at the Women’s World Cup, as they paid the price for a sloppy ten minutes before the break, as they allowed Colombia to cruise into a 2-0 advantage. The defeat means that South Korea are now on the verge of being eliminated at the group stage for the second straight edition of the World Cup, and a third in four appearances.
Losing their opening match at the competition is nothing new for South Korea, as they have lost their first match in each of their four previous appearances at the competition. Over that period, they have failed to find the back of the net, and they have conceded eleven times.
This will be a first meeting between the nations at the World Cup. Meanwhile, South Korea were beaten by Nigeria in their only previous encounter with an African opponent at the competition in 2019.
This is a challenging game to call, as both of these sides looked short of ideas in their opening match at the World Cup. However, the slight preference goes in favour of Morocco, who could be more competitive against a nation that they are more evenly matched against.
