The big game on the final day of matches in Group G will take place in Wellington, as South Africa and Italy will both have their sights set on a qualifying spot.
There will be a number of potential results on the final matchday in Group G, with Italy currently holding the advantage in the race for second spot. Italy sits two points ahead of South Africa, which means a draw could be enough to secure their progression. However, a draw will only be enough to book their round of 16 spot if Argentina fail to beat Sweden. Italy were extremely disappointing in their most recent match, as they fell to a huge 5-0 loss against Sweden.
That defeat against the Swedes means that Italy will be looking to avoid losing back-to-back matches at the same edition of the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history. However, they will need to score at least twice to avoid setting a new record low total for fewest goals in the group stage.
South Africa had a golden opportunity in their second round of matches, as they led 2-0 against Argentina with just 24 minutes remaining. However, they allowed their South American rivals back into the contest, and those dropped points could yet prove crucial in their bid to reach the round of 16 this summer.
But, the draw against Argentina saw South Africa pick up their first ever point at the Women’s World Cup. Prior to that draw, they had lost each of their previous four matches at the competition. Their two goals also saw them double their tally of goals at the World Cup throughout their history.
This will be the first clash between Italy and South Africa at the Women’s World Cup. In fact, Italy has only come up against an African nation on one previous occasion at the tournament, as they registered a 1-0 win over Nigeria in 1991.
This will be a tense match between these two sides with a place in the round of 16 up for grabs. Italy were extremely disappointing in their previous match, while South Africa have been very competitive across their opening two matches at the competition. For that reason, we will be siding with South Africa registering a first ever win at the competition.
