Slovakia will be looking to enhance their chances of reaching the EUROs next summer when they host Iceland on Thursday. A victory for the home side will see them gain qualification by securing a second-place finish behind Portugal in the standings.
It has been a solid qualification campaign for the EUROs next summer for Slovakia, and they could wrap up second place in the standings with a victory at home this week. The hosts already sit five points clear of Luxembourg with two games remaining, meaning their place could be assured even if they lose if Luxembourg fail to land maximum points in their match.
Slovakia have been in very form throughout the qualifying campaign, as they have won five of their eight matches. They have defended excellently throughout the campaign, as they have conceded just five. However, they have appeared short in the final third at points, as they have netted just eleven goals. They come into this match in solid recent form after winning two of their previous three, which includes a recent 1-0 away success against Luxembourg.
Iceland are one of the only other nations that could yet finish second in the standings, but they will need to record victories in each of their final two matches and hope that Slovakia fall to successive defeats. The visitors have won just three of their eight matches in Group J, but they have been impressive in the final third after netting 15 goals.
After a rocky start to qualification, they have been in fine form since the September international break. They come into this fixture after going three without defeat, while they have won twice over that period. Their latest success was a 4-0 win over Liechtenstein last month, but they haven’t won on the road since a 7-0 success over the same rivals in late March.
Slovakia hold the advantage in the overall record, as they have won four of the previous six meetings between these sides. Iceland’s only win was a 2-1 success in March 2018. Slovakia have landed victories in each of the previous two, which includes a 2-1 away win in June.
This should be an interesting clash in qualifying this week. However, we will be siding with the home side landing victory to ensure their progression through to the EUROs next summer.
