Tottenham Hotspur will be attempting to reach the quarterfinal stage of the FA Cup for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign in midweek. They will travel to Sheffield United, who have been in solid form at Bramall Lane throughout the domestic campaign.
It has been an excellent week or so for Tottenham Hotspur, as they have moved into the top four in the Premier League standings. A Champions League finish remains the main goal for Spurs this term, but it’s likely that fans would take a first piece of silverware since 2008 over a top four finish. Antonio Conte was brought to the club to win honours, but the Italian will once again be absent from the sidelines this week.
Domestically, Spurs have been pretty in recent weeks, as they have picked up four victories from their previous five games. Their most recent victory was a 2-0 home success against Chelsea on Sunday, with Harry Kane netting his 20th goal of the campaign. An FA Cup success may be enough to keep the England captain at the club next season.
Sheffield United remain on course to finish in the top two positions in the Championship this term, as they bid to return to the Premier League. A much-needed return to winning ways arrived in their previous fixture, as they edged to a 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane against Watford.
The Blades needed to show all their quality in the previous round, as they battled back against Wrexham to claim a 3-1 replay victory against the National League side. There is likely to be confidence around Sheffield United coming into this fixture, as they have progressed from the fifth round in each of their previous two showings.
This is the first meeting between the teams in the FA Cup since the 1957-58 season. On that occasion, the Blades picked up a 3-0 win. The only win recorded by Spurs against Sheffield United in the FA Cup was recorded in the 1901 FA Cup final.
This should be a thrilling fixture in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday. Sheffield United will make life extremely difficult for Spurs, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see them progress through to the next round of the competition following a penalty shootout.
