The reigning champions will be back in Premier League action on Sunday, as they will be looking to land a third straight win to start the new season. Sheffield United will be the hosts, as they look for a first point this term.
It has been an impressive start to the 2023-24 season for the reigning Premier League champions, as Manchester City go in hunt for a historic fourth straight title. City eased to an opening win of the season on the opening night, as they landed a 3-0 win over Burnley, and they increased their performance levels last weekend to cruise past Newcastle United.
City broke the deadlock after the half hour mark, with Julian Alvarez scoring an excellent goal after neat build-up play. The champions wasn’t able to add to their advantage but they defended excellently to limit Newcastle to just one shot on goal. Phil Foden was in excellent form last weekend, as he created seven chances, which was his most in a single Premier League fixture.
The pressure will continue to increase on Sheffield United this weekend, as the Blades are still looking to secure their first point since returning to the Premier League. They came close to picking up a point last weekend, as they were denied a draw in the closing staged by Nottingham Forest.
It was a much improved effort by United, with Gustavo Hamer scoring their first goal since returning to the Premier League. But, a moment of defensively vulnerability allowed Chris Wood to score a headed winner with just a minute remaining of the 90. They will need to defend much better this weekend.
Man City comes into this match after winning each of their previous five fixtures against the Blades. Over that period, City are yet to concede. The most recent encounter came in the FA Cup last term, with the treble-winners landing a 3-0 win at Wembley Stadium.
Sheffield United will need to be much harder to break down this weekend if they are to get anything from the game. However, we find it incredibly difficult to overlook the free-flowing champions, meaning that a comfortable win for City is the most likely outcome.
