Chelsea and Sheffield United collide in the Premier League on Sunday evening, with the Blues looking for an important victory to move back into the top half. The Blades will also need maximum points to close the gap on safety.
Two sides located in the bottom half of the Premier League standings will collide in the English top-flight this weekend. Chelsea have endured another miserable campaign this term, and they look set to finish outside of the European spots for the second straight season. The Blues have at least gone five matches without defeat ahead of their home match against Man United.
Sheffield United’s season-long stay in the Premier League looks under increasing threat at this stage. The Blades remain rock bottom of the standings, as they have won just three times in 29 league outings this term. Their recent run of form means that they are ten points adrift from safety, while they also have the worst goal difference in the competition.
The Blades have already allowed 45 goals in 15 home league matches this season. In Premier League history, only Watford after allowing 46 goals in home matches have conceded more. Since Chris Wilder returned to the club, their defensive record has remained poor. Sheffield United have allowed 26 goals in eight home matches, meaning that they are averaging 3.3 goals against per fixture.
Chelsea have also endured defensive issues throughout the season. The Blues haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet in their last eleven matches on the road, which is their longest run without a shut out since September 2020. But, their recent performances will at least offer a glimmer of hope that they are finally getting their act together under Mauricio Pochettino.
Sheffield United were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea in the previous fixture between the sides at Bramall Lane. However, they haven’t lost back-to-back home matches against the Blues since 1965. Meanwhile, Chelsea have won six of their last eight league matches against the Blades, losing on just a single occasion over that period.
Sheffield United’s stay in the Premier League looks set to come to an end over the coming weeks. We fully expect Chelsea to land maximum points in this fixture at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
