Aston Villa will be aiming to get their Champions League push back on track this weekend after dropping to a second loss in four matches in the league. They will be heavily favoured against a Sheffield United side that were beaten once again in midweek.
For the first time this season, Aston Villa are coming under pressure in their pursuit of a Champions League spot in the Premier League. In fact, the Villa could kick off this weekend sitting fifth in the standings if Spurs are able to claim maximum points against Brentford.
Unai Emery’s side have now lost two of their last four in the league, and they have recorded just one win in their last five league matches. The Villa were well below their usual high standards in midweek, as they crashed to a 3-1 home loss against Newcastle. That was their first defeat at Villa Park since February, and they were incredibly wasteful in the final third after failing to convert more than once from six shots on target.
Sheffield United will have the home advantage this weekend, as they desperately look for a much-needed victory to enhance their chances of survival. The Blades sit bottom of the standings after 22 rounds of matches, and they are currently nine points adrift from safety.
They come into this weekend after losing three of their last four matches. Their most recent defeat would have stung more than most, as they twice led against Crystal Palace before falling to a 3-2 loss. One of the positives in recent weeks have been the performances of Ben Brereton Diaz, who has now scored twice since signing for the club from Villarreal.
Villa have recorded one win in the last five meetings between these sides in the Premier League. Sheffield United have also landed victories in each of their last three home matches against their Midlands rivals, which includes a 1-0 win in March 2021.
The Blades caused Villa a lot of problems in the 1-1 draw in December, and they could be good value to go one better this weekend. It is a vital home match for Sheffield United, and they could take advantage against an out of sorts Villa.
