Two underperforming sides in La Liga will lock horns on Sunday, as Sevilla welcome Villarreal to Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The hosts will be looking for maximum points to move clear of the bottom three places in the La Liga standings.
It hasn’t been the start to the season that either Sevilla or Villarreal would have been hoping for, as both Spanish giants currently find themselves in the bottom half of the standings. Sevilla are already onto their second manager this term, but results haven’t improved in recent weeks, as they come into this fixture without a victory in their last five.
So far this term, the reigning Europa League holders have landed victories in just two of their 13 matches, and they have suffered five domestic defeats. That run of form leaves them just four points above the relegation places coming into this weekend. Sevilla’s run of draws was ended last weekend, as they were handed a fifth defeat of the campaign when falling to a 2-1 defeat on the road against Real Sociedad.
Things haven’t gone much better for Villarreal so far this term, as the Spanish side sits just three points higher than Sevilla in the current standings. However, the visitors have won four of their opening 14 matches, which sees them sit 12th in the standings. A third win in five matches this weekend would see them close the gap on the top half of the standings to one point.
Their confidence should be boosted ahead of this fixture on Sunday, as they landed a hard-fought 3-1 home success in their previous match in the league last weekend. Jose Luis Morales was the hero in that fixture, as the forward netted a stunning second half hat-trick.
Sevilla are unbeaten in their last four matches against Villarreal in La Liga. They have won each of their previous three home matches against their rivals, which includes a 2-1 success in the latest clash between the sides in Seville in April. Villarreal’s only win in the previous seven meetings with Sevilla was achieved in May 2021.
Sevilla boasts an impressive record in this fixture, and that could be hard to overlook this weekend. However, Villarreal could be the value in the betting, as they looked back to somewhere near their best when landing a home victory last weekend.
