Two of the bottom three in La Liga will lock horns on Sunday, as Sevilla look to end a three-game losing run when they take on Las Palmas. But, which side could be best placed to land a first victory of the new season?
It has been a dismal start to the new La Liga season for Sevilla, as the same issues from last season are rearing their head once again. The reigning Europa League champions currently sit bottom of the standings after three rounds of matches, as they have fallen to three straight defeats at the start of the new season. Sevilla have already allowed eight goals. However, they still have quality in the final third after netting on five occasions.
Their most recent match saw Sevilla dealt another blow, as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Girona. The Spanish side drew level in that fixture on the stroke of half time, but they weren’t able to get back into the game after falling behind for the second time ten minutes into the second half.
Las Palmas also find themselves toward the bottom of the league standings coming into this weekend, as they have picked up just two points from their opening four matches. They have scored just once across their outings, and they have allowed three goals.
The Spanish side suffered a second defeat in four before the international break, as they were edged out by Girona on September 3. However, they were unfortunate to end up on the losing side in that match, as the hosts broke the deadlock with just two minutes remaining.
Sevilla have dominated the recent encounters between these two sides, as they have won each of their last four matches against Las Palmas. That includes a 1-0 victory in this fixture when they both previously competed in La Liga in 2017-19. The most recent win for Las Palmas in this fixture came back in 2015, as they landed a 2-0 home win.
Something needs to change quickly for Sevilla if they are to avoid getting dragged into another battle at the wrong end of the standings. This looks like an ideal chance for them to get on track this season, and we could see them landing a 2-0 home win over Las Palmas on Sunday.
