Europa League specialists Sevilla will have their sights set on more success in the competition this term. They will face a tricky test in the round of 16 this year, but they will have home advantage for the first of their two showdowns with Fenerbahce over the next seven days.
Sevilla has been the side many have been keen to avoid in the Europa League throughout recent history. No side has won more honours in the competition than the Spanish side, as the La Liga club is chasing a seventh honour in 2023. They come into this stage of the competition after avoiding a scare in the previous round, as they almost let their 3-0 lead from the first leg against PSV slip a few weeks ago.
However, ultimately a 2-0 defeat in the Netherlands couldn’t stop them from reaching this stage of the competition. But, they will need to bounce back to their very best form, as they have lost each of their last three. In their previous two domestic fixtures, they have conceded nine goals, with six of those coming against Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday evening.
Fenerbahce could be one of the sides to keep tabs on in the Europa League this term, as the Turkish side eased throughout their group stage campaign without losing a game. They won four of their six fixtures before the turn of the year, and scored a group-high of 13 goals.
In the group stage, they also picked up two wins from the three matches that they played on the road. But, their record against Spanish opposition is incredibly weak, as Fenerbahce has lost eight of their previous nine against teams that play their trade in La Liga.
This will be the third time that Fenerbahce and Sevilla have clashed in European competition. Sevilla lost over two legs against Fenerbahce in the 2007-08 season, with this exact fixture ending in a 3-2 win for Sevilla, before they were beaten by the same scoreline in Turkey.
This should be a very interesting game in the Europa League. We will be taking a chance on Fenerbahce this week, as they are unbeaten in their previous seven matches in the competition. Meanwhile, Sevilla has looked extremely weak defensively in recent domestic outings.
