Sevilla has eased away from the relegation places in recent weeks, and they could climb into the top half of the standings with victory this week. However, Espanyol will desperately be looking for a second straight success in their race to avoid relegation.
It has been a productive second half to the season for Sevilla, as they look on course to finish in the top half of the La Liga standings. They could also yet qualify for the next season’s Champions League if they are able to win the Europa League. Sevilla comes into this fixture having won three of their last four, but they were beaten in their most recent league fixture by Girona.
It wasn’t for the lack of trying in their previous fixture, as Sevilla dominated the ball and had the greater chances in that 2-0 defeat. However, they were wasteful in the final third of the field, as they managed just five shots on target despite registering 23 shots. They were made to pay for those missed chances as Girona scored goals either side of the half time break.
Espanyol will be hoping to use Sevilla’s escape as a blueprint for their own survival charge over the coming weeks, as they come into this fixture sitting 18th in the standings. They have lost three of their previous five, but they were winners in their most recent fixture to edge to within two points of safety.
It was a pivotal victory for Espanyol on Sunday, as they reignited their chances of a survival bid this term. The only goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot after 38 minutes, as Joselu netted the important winning goal to keep Espanyol within touching distance of safety.
Sevilla has an excellent record in this fixture, as they are unbeaten in nine previous meetings with Espanyol. Over that period, they have recorded six victories. Their most recent success was achieved back in September, as they landed a 3-2 win on the road.
Sevilla has been in excellent home form since the turn of the year, with their recent defeat against Girona being a rare blip. We expect them to get back on track in front of their own fans on Thursday with a 2-0 win over Espanyol.
