Serhou Guirassy: 3 Goals on Both Ends in 15 Minutes as Dortmund Beat Villarreal 3-2

Borussia Dortmund opened their Champions League campaign with a chaotic win. Serhou Guirassy scored twice, then turned the ball into his own net, all within a hectic final quarter-hour. The 3-2 victory over Villarreal came on his 100th appearance for the club.

A Slow Burn Before the Storm

Villarreal started brightly at Signal Iduna Park. Pau Navarro headed narrowly wide early on. Tajon Buchanan later forced a save from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Dortmund also saw Konstantinos Karetsas stretchered off before the half-hour mark. The first half ended goalless despite chances at both ends.

Guirassy Takes Over

Dortmund broke the deadlock just after the restart. Renato Veiga deflected a cross into his own net in the 53rd minute. Santiago Mouriño equalised for Villarreal in the 66th, assisted by Georges Mikautadze. Then Guirassy took control. He poked home from close range in the 80th minute, finishing a pinpoint Fábio Silva cross. Five minutes later, he converted a penalty after being fouled by Mouriño, sending Gulácsi the wrong way.

Stoppage time brought one final twist. A Nicolas Pépé free kick struck Kobel and deflected in off Guirassy, cutting the lead to 3-2. Dortmund held on for the win.

A Record-Setting Night for the Striker

Guirassy's double moved him to 19 Champions League goals since the 2024-25 season, trailing only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé in that span. He also became the first player in competition history to score twice and register an own goal in the same match. His overall tally of 21 Champions League goals now ranks fifth among African players, behind Mohamed Salah, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, and Sadio Mané.

Guirassy led all players in shots, box touches and duels won, and Villarreal edged the shots on target 8-7. But the defining oddity of the night is that two of the five goals were own goals — Veiga's opener for Dortmund and Guirassy's late deflection for Villarreal.

Dortmund now sit on three points from their opening league-phase match. Villarreal remain winless under new coach Iñigo Pérez, still searching for their first win of the season.
