Group B is one of the most interesting groups of Euro 2020 Championship qualifiers, and both Serbia and Portugal will be hopeful of making it through to next summer’s showpiece event through qualification from their group. How will the teams standoff on their match on September 7th? Find out in our Serbia VS Portugal prediction!
Serbia and Portugal have both been guilty of not starting this EURO 2020 qualification campaign in any kind of form. However, qualification through the group remains a fundamental issue for Serbia. They will need to finish in the top two to make sure of their place in next summer’s Euros. Meanwhile, Portugal has its Nations League success to fall back on if they don’t make the top two. This clash will help narrow down the sides that could finish in the qualifying places in this group, which are currently occupied by Ukraine and Luxembourg.
Serbia has only won one of their three matches so far. That victory came last time out against Lithuania. It was the perfect response from them following their mauling in Ukraine in the previous game. The 5-0 defeat to Ukraine was a clear indicator that they might not have the quality that is needed to reach the top-two. However, the victory against Lithuania did at least improve the mood within the camp. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a brace in this win, while there were also goals from Luka Jovic and Adem Ljajic. This fixture is a repeat from their opening day clash, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Portugal would have been disappointed with this point, but it could be argued that they already had one eye on the upcoming Nations League by this point. Dusan Tadic had put Serbia ahead before Danilo Pereira equalized. Portugal has been a strange country over the past few years when it has come to qualifying as they always struggle before lifting their game when the major competition comes around. Confidence should be high in the camp after they won the Nations League in their last outing, but Portugal will have to raise their game if they want to win this group.
Portugal has never lost against Serbia, and have won two of their previous five meetings. The last match between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw, while Portugal won the two matches before that in the qualification campaign for the 2016 Euros.
Portugal are a strange commodity when it comes to qualification, but Serbia has had multiple problems when they have come up against the better sides in this group so far. Expect Cristiano Ronaldo to play a big part in a less than convincing win for the Portuguese.
