Serbia’s hunt for a EURO qualifying spot continues on Sunday, as they play their final match in Group G. They will need maximum points at home against Bulgaria to stand any chance of topping the group standings, but they could yet be unable to achieve that if Hungary gain a favourable result.
The race for a qualifying position at next summer’s EUROs comes to an end for Serbia on Sunday, as they desperately chase maximum points in their battle for at least a second place finish. They could yet finish top of the Group G standings if they pick up victory on the final day and Hungary fail to win.
Serbia have been very consistent throughout qualification, as they have won four of their seven matches. However, it would be a slight concern that they have been slightly too easy to beat, as they have already suffered two defeats. But, they are the best attacking side in the group, after netting on 13 occasions. They come into this final group stage match after winning two of their previous three, which includes a vital 3-1 home success over Montenegro in the last international break.
Bulgaria’s dreams of reaching the EUROs based on a qualifying finish in Group G are already over, as they have failed to win in six internationals. Over that period, they have picked up just two points, and they are the lowest scorers in the standings. However, they will have a second chance to reach the major tournament, as they already have a playoff match assured.
But, their form on the field this year has been damning, as they have failed to win in eight matches. In fact, they come into this final match in Group G after losing each of their previous four. Their latest loss was a 2-0 away defeat against Albania last month.
Bulgaria are yet to record a victory against Serbia in three attempts. Serbia have won two of the previous three, which includes a 1-0 success on the road in 2010. However, the previous encounter between the sides saw the points shared earlier in the year.
All the pressure on Sunday will be on Serbia, as they bid to secure their spot at next summer’s EUROs. We expect them to achieve that goal, as we struggle to overlook their clear credentials of claiming maximum points in front of their home fans in Leskovac.
