Two sides that have been in terrible form in the Bundesliga throughout 2021 will meet on Saturday. But, will either Schalke or Borussia Monchengladbach be able to get a win to end their miserable run of defeats?
Borussia Monchengladbach had been one of the favourites to finish in a Champions League place at the beginning of the season, but any chance of that happening looks to have completely disappeared due to their poor run of form since the turn of the yea. Gladbach are now eleven points off the Champions League places, and their recent run of results doesn’t indicate that the gap is going to grow any smaller. They are winless in their last six, and have won just eight games in 25 so far this season. Gladbach will come into this game against the side at the bottom of the league in worse form than their opponents, as they have lost their last four games. They were beaten convincingly again this past weekend, as Augsburg beat them 3-1. The last month has been the most damaging for the club, as they have been knocked out of the DFB-Pokal as well as dropping down the league standings.
Schalke are almost certainly going to be relegated at the end of the season, as they are still 12 points from safety, with an inferior goal difference to every side around them. It has been a more than disappointing season for them this term, as they have picked up just ten points from 25 games. Schalke have won just once all season, and have conceded 66 goals, which is more than any other side. Meanwhile, they have only found the net on 16 occasions, which is also the worst record in the league.
Schalke won the last meeting between these sides at the Veltins Arena, as they won 2-0 in January last year. However, Gladbach gained revenge earlier this season, as they beat Schalke 4-1 in November. Schalke have won three of the past five games between these sides at the Veltins.
This isn’t the easiest game to call, as both sides have been in miserable form over the past couple of months. However, Gladbach still have the quality in their squad, and we can’t imagine that they will lose to this Schalke side that have won just once all season.
