Borussia Dortmund started the season incredibly slow, but they now find themselves in an excellent position to challenge for the league title. They will be chasing a sixth straight win on Saturday, which could move them to the summit.
It has been an incredible transformation at Borussia Dortmund since the early weeks of the season, as the club now finds themselves locked in a battle for the German title against Bayern Munich. Just goal difference separates the two sides, but Dortmund could move to the top of the standings with a success on the road this weekend. Their form couldn’t be much better at present, as they have won their previous five matches.
Their most recent win was picked up at home last Friday, as they battled excellently to record a 2-1 home success against RB Leipzig. Marco Reus scored the opening goal from the penalty spot after 21 minutes, before Emre Can doubled the advantage just before the half time break. That was a level of performance that we expect from potential champions.
Many would write off Schalke before even examining their chances this weekend, but that could be a huge mistake. Despite sitting 17th in the Bundesliga standings, they are the only other team in the division that has failed to lose over their previous five matches. A run of three draws and back-to-back wins has seen them rise off the bottom of the standings, and a third consecutive win this weekend would lift them out of the bottom three.
Schalke was in fine form last weekend, as they claimed a 2-0 win on the road against Bochum. An own goal on the stroke of half time gave them the lead, before Marius Bulter doubled the advantage with ten minutes remaining.
Dortmund has an excellent record in this fixture, as they have landed four straight victories against Schalke. Schalke’s only win in the previous seven meetings between the sides was achieved in April 2019, away from home.
Schalke’s recent form needs to be respected ahead of this fixture, as they have been excellently defensively over their last five. However, Dortmund appears to be a team clicking at present, and we expect them to maintain their title charge with a slender win on the road on Saturday.
