Important action will take place at the bottom of the Serie A standings this week, as Salernitana and Empoli collide in a six-pointer. Both sides come into this round in the bottom three places, but a victory for the visitors could see them end the round in 15th.
Two sides that have been struggling for victories in Serie A will collide this Friday in a relegation six-pointer in the Italian top-flight. There will be increased pressure on the home side this week, as Salernitana desperately need maximum points to close the gap on their rivals to two points. A defeat could leave them with far too much work to do to avoid relegation.
The Italian side have landed just two victories in their 23 outings this term, and they come into this round of matches after going five without a win in the league. Over that period, they have suffered four defeats. Salernitana at least ended that losing sequence in their latest match, as they landed a draw against Torino last Sunday.
This season hasn’t gone much better for Empoli to this point, as the Italian club sits second-bottom in the standings after 23 rounds of matches. They come into this round in much better recent form than their rivals, having avoided defeat in each of their last three fixtures. But, each of their previous two have ended in draws.
Their most recent tie was picked up against Genoa last Saturday. Empoli created the better opportunities in that fixture, but they struggled to be clinical in front of goal. That has been a continued issue throughout this season, as they are the lowest scorers in Serie A after netting just 15 times across their 23 matches.
Empoli has avoided defeat in each of their last five Serie A matches against Salernitana since the start of 2019. Over that period, they have recorded three wins, and two draws. Salernitana’s last positive result against Empoli was achieved in the second tier in May 2021 with a 2-0 home success.
There’s little to separate these sides in the Italian top flight this term, and it will likely be a cagey affair between the teams this weekend. However, the slight preference is for Empoli to land victory, as they have a positive head-to-head record and they come into the round in better form.
