There will be quarterfinal action in the DFB Pokal to look ahead to on Wednesday, as Borussia Monchengladbach bid to avoid a shock exit at the hands of FC Saarbrücken. But, which team will progress through to the last four of the German domestic competition?
It has been an indifferent season to this point for Borussia Monchengladbach, as they continue to struggle for points at the wrong end of the league standings. However, the DFB Pokal could be a perfect distraction from their Bundesliga struggles this term, as they are within two victories of reaching the final of the domestic cup competition.
Gladbach have won the tournament on three previous occasions, and they have reached the final on a further two occasions. Their most recent success in the competition was achieved in 1994-95, but they are yet to reach the final since that third success. The German side have been solid in the competition to this point, and they produced one of their best displays this term in the previous round to edge to a 1-0 win at home against Wolfsburg.
FC Saarbrücken have been one of the stories of the DFB Pokal this term, and they are within two wins of reaching a first ever final in the competition. They have only reached the last four on four occasions in their entire history, with their most recent run to that stage coming in 2019-20.
Saarbrücken made international headlines earlier this season when they managed to stun the reigning German champions by knocking out Bayern Munich in the second round. Their fairytale continued in the previous round, as they once again upset the odds to eliminate Eintracht Frankfurt. Therefore, it could be very challenging to overlook their chances this week.
This will be a historic clash between these two German sides, as it will be the first time that they have ever collided in a competitive fixture.
Gladbach will be the clear favourites in the betting to claim victory in this quarterfinal showdown on Wednesday, but it is hard to dismiss Saarbrücken’s claims after their dominant wins over Bayern and Frankfurt this term. Therefore, the most interesting angle could be to side with the home side to cause another shock.
