Russia faces Belgium at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg on Saturday with both sides having already secured qualification for Euro 2020.
Belgium lead Russia by three points in group I, having won all eight of their matches so far, with Russia’s only defeat coming in Belgium during the first round of matches back in March.
Roberto Martinez’s side won 3-1 in that fixture at the King Baudouin Stadium with an Eden Hazard brace taking Belgium to victory.
Both sides have been in imperious form ever since and have only conceded five goals throughout the qualifying campaign between them.
Belgium is likely to have a full bill of health with key players Hazard and Romelu Lukaku starting to find form after summer transfers away from the Premier League.
Russia’s only fitness worry is Fedor Kudryashov who has been suffering from an illness and is being monitored day to day.
With very little at stake for either side in this match, it is hard to predict how the two managers choose to set up.
Belgium has a number of good youth players Martinez will be keen to look at, while Russia’s coach Stanislav Cherchesov will continue to assess some of the newer additions to his squad.
Belgium will undoubtedly want to finish its qualification campaign with a 100% record, but as we saw last summer Russia can be a tough opponent when playing at home.
The likes of Aleksandr Golovin and Denis Cheryshev have been it outstanding form, both scoring in their 5-0 win away at Cyprus last time out and should prove a threat to Belgium’s defense.
Belgium’s defense is aging and out of form, so this should prove the kind of test Martinez will want to see his players come through.
Overall, Belgium should edge this game 2-1, but don’t be surprised to see Russia push them all the way.
