There will be fascinating action in Group H of the Champions League on Wednesday, as FC Porto look to move level on points with FC Barcelona at the top of the standings. However, Royal Antwerp could be primed to cause a shock result in front of their home fans.
The pressure will be on FC Porto as they return to Champions League action on Wednesday evening. The Portuguese giants currently sit in the second qualifying spot in Group H, as they have picked up one win from their two matches. However, there could be a battle ensuing for that second spot in the standings with both sides currently sitting third and fourth within striking distance.
Royal Antwerp are one of those sides, but they will likely need a positive result in this fixture after losing each of their opening two matches in the Champions League this season. The side from Belgium have already allowed a group-high of eight goals, and they have struck just two efforts in response.
Porto’s record away from home in the group stage of the Champions League has been excellent in recent years, as they have landed three straight wins. They have also netted at least three goals in each match over that period. This is currently their longest winning run on the road since October 2007.
Antwerp remain a young side that are improving, as they have the second-youngest average age of any side in the Champions League this term. But, they have conceded a Champions League-high of eight goals from their two matches already, and they have allowed more shots and shots on target than ay other side in the competition.
This will be the first time that Porto and Antwerp have collided. Interestingly, it is also only the third time that the hosts have come up against Portuguese opposition, having edged past Martimo in the UEFA Cup over two legs in 1993-94.
This should be a high-scoring fixture between these two sides that like to play on the front foot this week. However, it looks challenging to take on Porto, who have an excellent record on the road in the group stage, and have also won five of their last six against teams from Belgium.
