The race for a place in next season’s SPL continues on Sunday, as the crucial second leg in the playoffs will take place. It is very much advantage Partick Thistle coming into the second leg, as they hold a healthy advantage ahead of their trip to Ross County this weekend.
The final match of the Scottish domestic season takes place on Sunday, as the final team that will be competing in next season’s SPL is determined. The second leg of the SPL playoffs will be staged at Global Energy Stadium, with Ross County having the crucial home advantage, as they bid to overturn a 2-0 first leg disadvantage.
In truth, everything went against them in that first leg, with Partick Thistle racing into a 2-0 advantage by the half time break. The deadlock was broken after just nine minutes when Aidan Fitzpatrick put the side from the second tier 1-0 ahead. Things went from bad to worse for Ross County less than ten minutes later, as they were reduced to ten men when Dylan Smith was sent off.
Partick took full advantage of their extra man advantage before the half time break, as Brian Graham smashed home to give them a 2-0 advantage. However, the hosts weren’t able to score a third in the second period, despite registering 25 shots in the match.
Ross County were in damage limitation for much of the second period, as they played extremely defensively to avoid suffering a heavier defeat which could have been extremely damaging to their chances in the second leg. County failed to register a single shot on target in the first match, but an early goal on Sunday would very much put them back in contention.
Partick Thistle are now unbeaten across their previous three matches against Ross County, with both of their wins over that period being secured in home fixtures. Their last visit to Ross County came back in April 2019, as the sides played out a 0-0 draw. However, the hosts have won this exact fixture in two of the previous three editions.
The advantage is firmly with the visitors coming into this second leg, and their recent form gives them every chance of seeing out the victory. We expect to see a more competitive display by County on Sunday, but we fail to see them overturning their 2-0 deficit.
