The top two sides in Group G after two rounds of matches in the Europa League will lock horns on Thursday. AS Roma will be looking for a big performance, as they will be aware that a victory over Slavia Praha will lift them to the top of the standings.
AS Roma have been key contenders in Europe since Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the club, and they will be targeting a second straight appearance in the Europa League final this term. The Italian giants currently sit second in Group G after winning each of their opening two matches in the tournament so far this term.
Slavia Praha lead the group at this early stage, as they have landed victories in each of their opening two matches without conceding a goal. They have scored a very impressive eight goals over that period, with their strong attacking play proving too much for Sheriff and Servette across the opening two matchdays.
Roma have continued to impress in Europe this term, as their two victories so far means that they have now landed four group stage wins on the bounce. That is their longest ever winning sequence at this stage of a European tournament. But, they will be keen to avoid finishing second in this group and dropping into a playoff fixture.
Slavia Praha have been mightily impressive already in the Europa League this term, netting a tournament-high of eight goals without conceding. It is the first time in their European history that they have recorded back-to-back wins to kickstart their group stage campaign. The Czech side also boasts the best conversion rate in the tournament at 28.6%.
This will be the first time Roma and Slavia Praha have collided. Both previous encounters came in the 1995-96 UEFA Cup. The sides were locked level at 3-3 after the two legs, with the Czech side progressing courtesy of the away goals rule. However, Praha has lost six of their seven away matches in Italy.
This should be an enthralling encounter between these sides in Group G. We expect both teams to find the back of the net, and it could be worth taking a chance on the visitors upsetting the odds based on their clinical nature in front of goal.
