AS Roma will be looking to get their Serie A campaign back on track this weekend when they welcome Hellas Verona to Rome. The Italian giants have dropped to ninth in the standings following a poor run of form in the league under Jose Mourinho.
The pressure is increasing on Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, as the Italian club have quickly lost ground in the race for Champions League qualification. They now sit ninth in the standings after 20 rounds of matches after winning eight times and suffering seven defeats. A return to form will be desperately needed this weekend, as they have lost twice in their last three.
Over their previous five, Roma have recorded just a single win, and that leaves them five points off the pace in the race for a Champions League spot in 2023-24. Mourinho would have been very disappointing with his team’s performance in their previous match, as Roma were easily beaten by a 3-1 scoreline at the San Siro by AC Milan. Roma’s only goal in that defeat was a consolation from the penalty spot with 20 minutes remaining by Leandro Paredes.
Hellas Verona will be looking to inflict further misery on Roma this weekend, as they go in search of a second straight victory in the competition. Despite their recent win, Verona remain locked in the relegation places, but a victory this weekend could see them end the round as high as 14th.
Verona were excellent in their previous match, as they battled to a 2-1 home success against Empoli. The crucial second effort in that victory was netted early in the second period by Cyril Ngonge. However, they will be without Ondrej Duda on Saturday after he was sent off in the closing stages against Empoli.
Verona landed a shock 2-1 success in the first meeting between these sides this season. That win ended a three-game unbeaten sequence for Roma, who landed a 1-0 victory in this exact fixture last term.
Roma should have more than enough quality to get their season back on track this weekend against a Verona side that have struggled for consistency throughout 2023-24. Therefore, the safest play appears to be on the hosts registering a victory.
