AS Roma have made an excellent start to the Serie A season, and Jose Mourinho will be confident that he can finally deliver on the promise of getting the Italian giants back into the Champions League. This weekend, Roma hosts Fiorentina on Sunday.
Mourinho has come up short in achieving his target at Roma in each of his first two seasons in charge, as the club continue to dream of a return to the Champions League. However, the early evidence this term suggests that this could be the campaign that the highest level of European football is achieved.
Roma come into the upcoming round of matches sitting fourth in the overall standings, and they could move to within touching distance of AC Milan if they are able to claim maximum points this weekend. The Italian giants have been in excellent recent form on the field, as they have won three of their last four, and each of their previous two. Roma showed character last weekend, as they came back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 success away from home against Sassuolo.
However, this will likely be a big challenge for Roma, as Fiorentina are also knocking on the door of a Champions League spot at present. The team from Florence currently sits sixth in the standings, but they are just a point behind Roma in fourth. Meanwhile, Fiorentina have won two of their last three matches in the competition.
They put in an excellent performance last weekend, as they registered a 3-0 home win against Salernitana. Lucas Beltran opened the scoring after just six minutes, before further efforts in the success were added by Riccardo Sottil and Giacomo Bonaventura.
Fiorentina boast an impressive recent record against Roma, as they have won two of the last three. That includes a 2-1 victory in the previous clash. However, they haven’t won away from home against their rivals in eight attempts since a 2-0 victory back in April 2018.
Roma’s home record against Fiorentina could be the key factor to assess this weekend, as they have won each of the previous four meetings between the sides in Rome. Therefore, we will be siding with Mourinho’s side extended their advantage in the Champions League spots in Serie A on Sunday.
