The second leg between Roma and Feyenoord will take place in Rome on Thursday, with little to separate the sides following the first meeting in Rotterdam in mid February. But, which side will progress through to the next round of the Europa League this term?
AS Roma and Feyenoord have become familiar foes across recent seasons, with the Italian giants landing a famous success in the Europa Conference League a couple of years ago. However, the sides will lock horns for the second time this season on Thursday, with a place in the next round of the Europa League up for grabs.
There was nothing to separate the sides in the first leg last week, as Romelu Lukaku netted a late equaliser to rescue a draw for the Italian giants. Feyenoord had led in the tie at the half time break, with Igor Paixao netting the opening goal. In fact, the Dutch side created many of the clear openings, but they couldn’t force home a crucial second goal before Roma levelled the scores.
The Italian giants have been strong in home fixtures in Europe this season after winning all three of their group stage matches in Rome without conceding. In total, they scored nine goals across those matches, with three coming in their most recent home match in Europe against Sheriff in mid-December.
Feyenoord will be aware that this will be a huge challenge on the road, as they likely needed a victory in their home fixture to enhance their chances of reaching the next round. The Dutch side are yet to win in three matches away from home in Europe this term, and they have already conceded six goals.
This is the third straight season in which these sides have collided in the knockout stage of a European competition. Roma have won two of the last four meetings, with their most recent home success against their Dutch rivals coming in the quarterfinal stage of the Europa League last term.
Roma showed their quality in their home showdown with Feyenoord last term, and that could be the biggest indicator behind their likely success on the Thursday. Therefore, we expect the Italian giants to land a comfortable success in Rome this week to reach the next round.
