Rennes will be looking to keep their hopes of a second-place finish in Ligue 1 alive on Saturday, as they welcome Monaco. The visitors will be looking for a fourth straight victory to keep alive their own hopes of finishing in a Champions League place.
Marseille’s hold on second-place in Ligue 1 looks incredibly strong, but Rennes will be hoping to put pressure on their rivals with a second straight victory on Friday. Rennes has been in excellent form over recent weeks, and are unbeaten in their previous five fixtures.
During that run, they have recorded four victories and have been held to one draw. However, their advantage in the Champions League places stands at four points, which means their top three finish is far from assured. Rennes has won the second-most games in Ligue 1 in this season, and will be looking to continue their strong finish to the season.
They bounced back after a draw a couple of weeks ago with a victory against Reims. Benjamin Bourigeaud scored twice in that victory, which Martin Terrier also found the net in the dramatic 3-2 victory.
Monaco are one of the sides chasing a Champions League finish this season, and it would be hard to bet against them maintaining their challenge over the final weeks of the season. They have picked up three straight wins in the league, and at present, only Marseille are in better form. There is a six-point difference between Monaco and Rennes coming into this fixture, which means a victory for the away side is imperative.
Monaco maintained their excellent run of form at home last weekend, as they picked up a 2-1 victory against Troyes. Kevin Volland scored the winning goal in the game just before the hour mark.
Monaco have a fine recent record in this fixture, as they have won three of the previous four fixtures. They have also picked up wins in each of the last two fixtures between the sides. However, Rennes picked up a victory in the last fixture that they had home advantage, as they won 2-1 in September 2020.
This is a huge fixture in the contexts of the season for both sides. However, the narrow preference this weekend is for Monaco, who just appear to have hit a higher gear over recent weeks.
