Armchair fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to their football viewing on Thursday evening thanks to the Europa League action. One fixture sure to feature high on the watch-list comes from Spain where La Liga contenders Real Sociedad take on Italian Serie A club Napoli. This Group F game is scheduled for a 20:00 GMT kick-off.
Real Sociedad launched the Europa League Group F campaign with a strong win over HNK Rijeka on the road last week, placing them joint top of the pool. They earned all three points and the perfect start thanks to a match-winning goal scored by Bautista but had to wait until the 93rd minute to get their noses in front. It was a last-gasp victory but one they deserved on the balance of play.
The home team were in the much better form next time out when recording a weekend win over Huesca in La Liga on Sunday. This time Sociedad eased to a 4-1 victory with Oyarzabal netting a double, one goal either side of half-time. Mazanera added another with Isak rounding things off near the end to end the game as a contest beyond doubt.
Napoli weren’t quite as impressive as their hosts on matchday one of the Europa League and were beaten by AZ Alkmaar at home by a 1-0 score. It was a match the Italian Serie A side would have expected to win but they were edged out by a hungrier opponent that took their chance when it came. De Wit made the difference with a goal just before the hour mark, an advantage his teammates were able to hold on to.
The away side bounced back to winning ways at the earliest opportunity when taking three points in the league on Sunday thanks to a 2-1 away win over Benevento. The beaten side took a first-half lead, but Napoli battled back with an Insigne equaliser before Petagna added a quickfire second to swing the game in their favour.
Sociedad have the home advantage and better Europa League form so far. Napoli must improve on last week if they are to have any chance here, but their best would be good enough to see them go close to getting something out of the match.
