Real Sociedad’s battle for a Champions League spot in La Liga continues this weekend, as they welcome Girona to town. The visitors could yet achieve a European finish themselves this term, as they currently sit five points off Real Betis with five matches to play.
It promises to be a fascinating end to the season in the race for European qualification in La Liga, with a number of teams still fighting for vital points. Real Sociedad will be confident that they can hold onto fourth in the standings, as they sit seven clear of Villarreal with just under a month remaining. They have bounced back to form effectively in recent weeks, as they have gone four without defeat coming into this weekend.
Sociedad has also picked up victories in each of their last two matches. Their most recent success was secured in front of their home fans last Tuesday, as they landed a 2-0 home win against Real Madrid. Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barrenetxea scored the goals in that success.
Girona may yet be able to achieve a memorable end to the season, as they are in the mix for a top six finish. They come into this fixture sitting seventh in the standings, but they are just five points off Real Betis. Their recent form has also been excellent, as they have picked up four wins over their last five.
Girona also comes into this showdown after claiming victories in each of their previous three matches. The most recent of those wins was secured at home last Thursday, as they edged to a 2-1 home win against Mallorca. Bernardo Espinosa opened the scoring, before maximum points were secured in dramatic fashion by Valentin Castellanos with six minutes remaining.
Draws have been a common result when these sides have clashed in La Liga, with three of the last four ending level. Sociedad won the reverse clash between the sides in October by a 5-3 scoreline. However, Sociedad is unbeaten in their previous three home matches against Girona across the top two divisions in Spain.
Both of these sides come into this fixture in solid recent form. However, Sociedad boasts an excellent home advantage against Girona, and that could be a very difficult factor to overlook this weekend.
