Real Sociedad enjoyed an excellent 2022-23 season, and they will be looking to progress this term. However, Girona could present a tricky opening day assignment for Sociedad at Reale Arena.
Real Sociedad were one of the stories of the season in La Liga last term, as they managed to secure a top four finish in the Spanish top-flight. They started the season excellently, before scraping over the line in the second half of the season. Sociedad won 21 of their 38 matches, which was the most of any side other than the top three. However, they struggled for goals throughout the campaign, as they netted just 51, which was nearly 20 fewer than Barcelona.
That appears to have been a position that the club have prioritised this summer, as Sociedad agreed a deal with RB Leipzig for the signing of Andre Silva. The Portuguese striker is a classy act on his day, and he undeniably offers Sociedad something that they didn’t have last season based on the fact that he has scored 140 career goals in 389 appearances.
Girona enjoyed a reliable campaign in La Liga last term, as they eventually finished the season in tenth. They would have been slightly disappointed with that finish, as they concluded the season just four points off the European places. However, they once again look to be a leading contender for at least a Europa Conference League spot.
They have brought in some big names over the summer moves, with Daley Blind signing from Bayern Munich, and Yangel Herrera, Pablo Torre, and Ivan Martin also joining the team. In pre-season, they went unbeaten in five matches, winning on three occasions.
Three of the previous four meetings between these sides have ended in draws. That included a 2-2 draw in this exact fixture in May. However, Sociedad is unbeaten in six previous clashes against Girona, winning on two occasions.
Sociedad enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign last term, but this looks like a much trickier opening to this weekend. We expect to see a tight clash between these two sides, and a chance will be taken on a draw being the outcome on Saturday.
