Real Madrid have a huge challenge on their hands if they are to successfully defend their La Liga title this season. They already have a seven-point gap to make up over Atletico Madrid, which means that they can’t afford to lost any more games this season.
In truth, Real Madrid haven’t had a bad start to the La Liga season this term. However, the form of Atletico Madrid has created a huge gap between the league leaders and the chasing pack. Real have won 12 of their 19 games this term, and have been on a decent run of form over their last five outings. Zinedine Zidane’s side haven’t lost during that run, and have won three times. The two draws during that sequence of results have proven to be disastrous for their chances this season though, and means that Atletico could go ten clear should they win their game in hand. Zidane’s future has also been up for debate over recent weeks, as Real were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Alcoyano last week. However, they managed to get back to winning ways against Alaves last time out. Karim Benzema scored a brace in that victory away from home.
Levante themselves have been on a decent run of form, as they have lost just once in six La Liga fixtures. It looks as though it will be a season in the middle of the table for Levante, as they look unlikely to get themselves into the fight for a European position. Levante have drawn their last two league games, with the most recent of those coming against Valladolid. Daniel Gomez Alcon and Roger Marti scored the goals to rescue a point in that recent home game.
Levante have enjoyed some positive results against Real Madrid in the last four years. They have picked up two draws and two wins in the seven matches that have been played between the two sides. Madrid have won three of the seven games played.
Things are becoming slightly uncomfortable for Zidane at Madrid at present, and the only way to ease the pressure will be to keep winning games. They should have the quality to get the three points from this game, but it won’t likely affect their chances of winning the league this season.
