Real Madrid’s focus is likely to have shifted away from La Liga in recent weeks, as their main aim will be to reach the Champions League final. A much-changed Los Blancos will take to the field in the Spanish capital this weekend, as Real take on relegation-threatened Getafe.
Real Madrid has slipped to third in the La Liga standings over recent weeks after losing two of their previous three matches. However, Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for his team over the weekend, as they wrapped up Copa del Rey glory with a 2-1 success against Osasuna. This weekend’s league outing will once again play a back-up position, as the fixture against Getafe is sandwiched in between the semi-final legs against Manchester City in the Champions League.
However, finishing second in the top-flight standings will remain a key goal for Real Madrid this season, as they will not be happy finishing below Atletico Madrid. But, their recent performances in the league have been underwhelming, as they have lost two of their previous three. Their last outing in La Liga saw Real suffer a 2-0 away defeat against Real Sociedad.
This will be a much more important game for Getafe on Saturday, as they are still fighting for vital points in their battle to avoid the drop. They currently sit 18th in the overall standings, but a rare victory against Real Madrid could lift them up to 14th in the overall standings.
Getafe would have taken confidence from their previous outing, as they ended a four-game winless run with a success against Celta Vigo. Their only goal in that win was netted after just three minutes, with Enes Unal netting the winner from the penalty spot.
Real Madrid has a staggering record in this fixture, as they have won 22 of the previous 26 clashes between the sides across all competitions. They also come into this match after winning each of the two without conceding. Getafe’s most recent win over Real was recorded at home in January 2022.
It will be fascinating to see what kind of team Ancelotti plays for this showdown on Saturday. We expect him to make a wholesale changes, meaning that an outside bet on Getafe or the draw may be a solid selection.
