Real Madrid’s grip on the La Liga title appears to be weakening, as they have dropped to nine points off the pace. They will desperately need to get back to winning ways this weekend, as they welcome Espanyol to the Spanish capital.
Barcelona’s unrelenting pace in La Liga has been maintained over recent weeks, and that has left Real Madrid chasing shadows behind their title rivals. The defending champions now sit nine points off the league leaders, as they have won just twice in their previous five matches. In recent weeks, they have really struggled to find the back of the net, as they have been held to successive draws in La Liga.
The most recent of those was picked up on the road on Sunday evening, as they couldn’t find a way through against Real Betis. Madrid managed 15 shots overall in that game on the road, but they could hit the target on just five occasions. However, Betis defended well throughout the fixture, and few could argue against them deserving the 0-0 draw in the end.
Espanyol still find themselves in the bottom half of the La Liga standings, but they have won two of their last three matches. Given the draw competitive nature in La Liga this term, their survival is still far from assured, as they sit just two points above the bottom three places in the league standings. Defeat this weekend could see them drop down the standings at an alarming rate.
They would have likely been extremely disappointed with their showing in their most recent fixture, as they were beaten 2-1 on the road by Valladolid. The hosts were extremely comfortable in that fixture, with Espanyol waiting until the final three minutes of the match to find the back of the net and trouble their opponents.
Real Madrid’s record in this fixture is extremely dominant, as they have picked up 24 wins from the previous 28 meetings between the sides across all competitions. Madrid has also picked up wins in each of the previous two, including a 3-1 win earlier this term.
This should be an easy enough game for Madrid to bounce back to winning ways in La Liga. We struggle to see anything other than a home win, with the league champions picking up a 2-0 win over Espanyol.
