It’s a weekend of important derby matches across European football and supporters have a clash of real interest in Spain where Real Madrid face-off against rivals Atletico Madrid. This La Liga spectacle is scheduled for a Saturday 20:00 GMT kick-off and will be shown live on TV to a massive audience. Which half of the Madrid divide will come out of this match celebrating?
This will be the 71st competitive meeting of these sides and the head-to-head scores at present show Real Madrid have 37 wins with Atletico Madrid claiming only 12 victories, 21 games ending in a draw. The most recent pairing saw Real Madrid snatch a hard-fought 1-0 in February thanks to a winning goal from Karim Benzema. At least one team has failed to find the net in each of the last three Madrid Derby matches.
Real Madrid started the week in fourth place on 20 points, trailing leaders, and opponents Atletico Madrid by six points. Blancos have played only 11 games this season which is one less than most teams in the division, winning six, drawing two and losing three. The locals have scored 17 goals while conceding 12. Interestingly, Real Madrid have won only one of their last four.
The spare victory in that poor run of form did come last time out when battling to a 1-0 away win over Sevilla. A tense match was eventually settled by an own goal from Bono who forced the ball into his own net with 55 minutes on the clock. A tad fortunate, perhaps, but Madrid know much better is required if they are to win this game.
Atletico Madrid are top of the La Liga title after making a strong start to the season. Do they have what it takes to hold their form and become challengers to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona? It’s certainly looking like they mean business in the early exchanges. Atletico lead the way despite having played two games less than nearest rivals Real Sociedad in second. They make this trip having won eight and drawn two games so far, scoring 21 goals and conceding only two.
The visitors enjoy a stunning run of form and were last seen beating Real Valladolid 2-0 a week ago. They won the points on that occasion with goals from Lemar and Llorente who both hit the net in the second half. The leaders also upset Barcelona with a 1-0 win last month.
If Atletico Madrid can add a win at Real Madrid to that victory over Barca they will force their critics to take this title challenge seriously. If the home team can win and stop the march of their rivals, they’ll blow the title race wide open.
The pre-match betting here has Real Madrid priced at 2.445 to win this match with Atletico Madrid available at odds of 2.936. The draw is 3.3.
