Two sides that are locked at contrasting ends of the Bundesliga standings will lock horns in the German top-flight this weekend. Leipzig will be chasing a fourth straight win in the league to enhance their Champions League prospects, while Mainz are looking for a second win on the bounce.
RB Leipzig will continue their hunt for a Champions League finish this weekend when the Bundesliga returns following the international break. The German side currently sits fifth in the standings, but they could move into fourth with a victory at home against Mainz on Saturday.
Leipzig comes into this round of matches in excellent recent form after picking up wins in each of their last three matches in the competition. In fact, only the top three teams in the competition have picked up more victories so far this season. Leipzig’s most recent victory was picked up away from home against Koln, landing a 5-1 success. Lois Openda was in excellent form in that clash, netting twice in the final half an hour.
There will also be pressure on Mainz when they return to action in the Bundesliga this weekend, as the final couple of months of the season will determine whether they will remain in the top-flight. At present, they sit 16th in the standings after winning just three of their 26 matches this season.
But, there could be newfound confidence within the squad after landing victory in their latest fixture before the international break. It was arguably their best display of the season so far against Bochum, with Jonathan Burkadt netting both goals in the success at home. However, this looks a tougher challenge on the road in Leipzig.
Mainz have a fine recent record in this fixture after winning each of their previous two against Leipzig without conceding. That included a 3-0 success in this exact fixture last season. Meanwhile, Leipzig have recorded just a single win in their last six league matches against their rivals.
Leipzig’s record in this fixture would be a fairly considerable concern ahead of this weekend. However, it appears challenging to overlook their chances of landing victory, as they have shown better form than Mainz across recent months in the Bundesliga.
