The Spanish league leaders return to domestic action following their midweek Champions League success on Sunday, as Real Madrid will be looking to open up an eight-point advantage at the summit. Rayo Vallecano will be the hosts, as they look to end a miserable run of form.
It has been a sensational season to this point for Real Madrid, and they could yet end the campaign with European and domestic honours. Los Blancos currently sit at the top of the La Liga standings after winning four of their last five matches in the competition. Real extended their advantage at the top to five points last weekend after securing a 4-0 home win against their closest rival, Girona.
There will be improvement expected from this Rayo Vallecano side this weekend after the change in management in midweek. However, it appears very hard to make a case for the hosts based on the fact that they have suffered four defeats in their last five matches in the competition. But, a return to form could see them end the round as high as 12th.
Vallecano has a poor record in Madrid derbies after losing four of their last six. Over that period, they have recorded just one win. However, Real Madrid’s away record in derby matches doesn’t fare that much better after losing two of their last three.
Real Madrid’s form could be the key betting angle this weekend, as they have avoided defeat in their last 18 matches in the competition. Meanwhile, they have only failed to score on one occasion over that period, with that coming after playing out a 0-0 draw against Vallecano in November.
Vallecano have picked up points against Real in three of the last six matches between the sides. That comes after a run of 17 straight defeats against Los Blancos in the top-flight. Vallecano have won two of their last three home matches against their local rivals.
Real Madrid don’t have the best record in derby matches, but it could be easy to overlook that trend based on their dominant record in the competition this term. Therefore, we will be siding with the league leaders landing victory to extend their advantage at the summit.
