The Gunners will get their Europa League campaign underway this week as they travel to Vienna to take on Austrian side Rapid Vienna. But, will the Gunners be able to get off to the perfect start in he competition this season?
Mikel Arteta has already shown that this Arsenal side are able to compete in cup competitions, as they have excelled in the domestic cups since his arrival. The Gunners went on to win the FA Cup at the end of last season, and they have already beaten Leicester City and Liverpool in the EFL Cup this season. However, the Gunners haven’t fared very well away from home in their recent fixtures, as they have lost their last two away from home in the Premier League.
The first of those came against Liverpool at Anfield, but they were beaten by Manchester City at the Etihad in their last league match. Arsenal didn’t play too badly in that fixture, but they were unable to take their chances when they got them. The only goal of the game in the win for City was scored in the opening half by Raheem Sterling.
Rapid Vienna will be hoping that they can remain competitive in this Europa League group, and they could be targeting the second place finish behind the Gunners. They have been in excellent form over recent weeks as they have won their last three and are sitting in second place in the Austrian top tier. Vienna played well in their most recent match, as they beat Wiener Neustadt 5-1 in the Austrian Cup. Marcel Ritzmaier scored twice in that victory, while there were also goals in the game for Christoph Knasmullner, Ercan Kara and Kelvin Arase. However, this will be a tougher task ahead of them.
This will be the third time that these two sides have faced off, and will be the first time that they have come up against each other in nearly 30 years. The last meetings came during the 1991-92 European Cup, with Arsenal winning the came at Highbury 6-1, and Rapid winning their home game 1-0.
The Gunners are already one of the favourites to win this competition this season, and they will further their claims as the team to beat on the opening night of Europa League action with a comfortable win in Vienna.
