The Europa League continues this week, and one of the most enticing fixtures will see Rangers play host to Lech Poznan. But, will the Scottish side be able to win their second game on the bounce in Europe?
Rangers have been in excellent form since the start of the season, and they could be in an excellent position to end their long wait for an SPL title. Rangers strong start coupled with a sluggish start for Celtic means that there is currently a six-point gap between the two sides. Ending the nine-year dominance that Celtic have achieved will be the main aim for Rangers this season, and their excellent record has certainly transferred into their Europa League form.
Rangers haven’t lost in domestic competition so far this season, and have conceded just three goals in ten games. They continued that excellent form with a hard-fought 2-0 away win against Standard Liege in their opening Europa League match. James Tavernier opened the scoring for the Gers in that win, before a stunning goal from the half-way line by Kemar Roofe ensured the three points would be returning to Scotland.
Poznan’s form has been disappointing over their last three games, as they are yet to win in any of these fixtures. They have lost on two occasions, and drawn once. Poznan were beaten on the opening night in the Europa League by Benfica, as they lost 4-2 to the Portuguese side. Mikael Ishak scored twice for Poznan in the defeat, but a late double by Darwin Nunez wrapped up the win for Benfica. Poznan ended their recent poor form with a draw last time out, but they will need to improve further if they are to have any chance of picking up a win at Ibrox.
Rangers will only be without one first-team player, as Nikola Katic isn’t expected back until at least January with an ACL injury. Meanwhile, Poznan will be without Mickey van der Hart, who is also out until January with a long-term injury.
These two sides will both be competing for the second qualifying spot behind Benfica, but judging by the form that both teams have been in, then it will be hard to see past Rangers winning their second Europa League group stage game of the season on Thursday.
