There will be an uphill battle in the Europa League for PSV on Thursday evening, as Sevilla were 3-0 winners in the clash between the sides last week. That means that the Spanish side will be the commanding favourites to reach the next stage of the competition, but could PSV pull off an unlikely comeback at home?
It could be argued that this tie between PSV and Sevilla is already as good as over coming into the second leg. Sevilla flexed their muscles in the opening leg between the sides last week, as they eventually ran out 3-0 winners. The scoring was opening on the stroke of half time by Youssef En-Nesyri. However, a five-minute spell in the second half ultimately proved costly for PSV.
They were extremely naïve in the opening minutes of the second period, and that saw that one-goal disadvantage crumble to a 3-0 loss. Lucas Ocampos scored the second goal in the game for Sevilla, before the victory was secured just five minutes later following Nemanja Gudelj’s effort. PSV threatened to get back into the game, but if a fourth goal was going to come, it always appeared likely that Sevilla would be the one to score it.
Last week’s win was Sevilla’s biggest knockout success in European competition since they beat Basel 3-0 in March 2016. Meanwhile, PSV’s defeat last week was their biggest suffered in a knockout fixture since a 3-0 loss against Zenit in February 2015.
It certainly bodes well for PSV’s chances on Thursday that they have scored seven unanswered goals across their previous two matches in the Europa League. However, they haven’t gone three games at home without conceding since December 2009.
Last week’s showdown between the two sides was the first time that Sevilla and PSV have ever locked horns. The 3-0 win for Sevilla means that they have a clear advantage, and they will be looking to maintain that 100% record over their Dutch rivals this week.
It looks unlikely that PSV will be reaching the next round of the Europa League this season. However, Sevilla is winless in their previous nine matches away from home in Europe, losing four over that period. That trend means that we will be siding with PSV on Thursday, but it’s unlikely that they will win by a wide enough margin to progress.
