Just four teams remain in the hunt for French Cup glory this season, and there will be a fascinating semi-final showdown in Paris this week. PSG will be heavily fancied to progress through to the next round, with Rennes likely to be the considerable outsiders in the betting on Wednesday.
PSG will be looking to end their 2023-24 campaign on a strong note this term, and that could yet be achieved by winning all three major trophies. They look secure at the top of the Ligue 1 standings, and their second domestic honour could be recorded with just two more victories in the Coupe De France.
The Parisians are the most dominant team in the tournament’s history, winning 14 major honours throughout their history. They have also claimed victories in the French Cup in two of the last three seasons. PSG have been very reliable in the competition to this point, scoring at least three goals in all four previous rounds. Their most recent success was achieved in the quarterfinal stage against Nice.
It could yet be a successful end to the season for Rennes, with the French club chasing a European finish in Ligue 1. However, they come into this semi-final showdown in indifferent form after winning just once across their last five fixtures. But, they have achieved victories in the French Cup throughout their history, winning the title on three previous occasions.
Rennes have overcome some big challenges to reach this stage of the competition, which included a penalty shootout success against Marseille in the round of 32. In the previous round, Rennes were professional against Le Puy F.23, landing a 3-1 success on the road against the minnows.
Rennes have a reliable record in this fixture, winning two of the last four meetings between the sides and suffering just one defeat over that period. They also showed their quality in the latest fixture between these sides after playing out a 1-1 draw.
This could be a tricky assignment for PSG in the French Cup this week, as the Parisians have underperformed in recent clashes with their rivals. However, based on the form of both sides in recent weeks, it appears very hard to overlook the prospect of a home victory for Luis Enrique’s side.
