The first big game of the French league season takes place on Sunday, as league leaders PSG host Lyon. Lionel Messi could make his first start for the Parisians this weekend, but can the visitors keep him out?
It has been a faultless start to the new Ligue 1 season for PSG, as they have picked up victories in each of their opening five fixtures. PSG have scored 16 times already this campaign, which makes them by far the highest scoring side in Ligue 1. They have looked more vulnerable defensively, as they have conceded an average of a goal against so far this term. PSG made it five wins from five last weeks, as they claimed a routine victory at home against Clermont Foot. Ander Herrera was the shock hero in that game, as he scored twice in the opening half an hour. Kylian Mbappe and Idrissa Gueye added further strikes in the second half. Herrera was once again the scorer in the Champions League in midweek, but PSG could only take a point from their visit to Club Brugge.
Finishing in the Champions League places in the French top-flight will be the main for Lyon this season, but they will need to find a consistency that they have struggled to find through the early weeks of the season. Lyon have won two of their opening five league games, and have been held on two occasions and lost once. However, they come into this game in great form, having won their last three in all competitions. They backed up their win against Strasbourg in the league last weekend with an opening day victory in the Europa League against Rangers. Kari Toko Ekambi scored in the 2-0 win at Ibrox.
Both sides picked up a win each in the league fixtures between these sides last season. PSG were beaten in their home fixture, before gaining revenge with a 4-2 success in Lyon. However, that victory for Lyon remains their only win in this fixture in the last four meetings.
PSG have been excellent at the start of the new season, while Lyon have struggled to find the right balance. The Parisians are likely to give Messi a first league start this weekend, and the Argentinean could make an impact in one of the biggest fixtures in French football with a goal.
