Two of the biggest names in European football clash on Tuesday evening and armchair fans intending to follow the action live on TV are in for a rare treat. French champions PSG play host to German champions Bayern Munich from 20:00 GMT on Tuesday in the quarter-final second leg. The pair served up a five-goal thriller last week and are capable of picking up where they left off in the decider.
The quarter-final tie remains there to be won with PSG holding a 3-2 aggregate advantage. These teams have met 10 times previously and an interesting stat is they have never produced a draw. PSG lead the head-to-head stats on six wins with Bayern Munich claiming the other four. The visitors know they must respond with a convincing away win if they are to have any chance of progressing.
PSG score stunning win
Is this the season PSG finally secure Champions League glory after spending huge amounts of cash in the transfer market? The Parisians certainly appear to have a strong chance and moved a step closer to the final with a stunning win in Munich last midweek. It was a game they started as second favourites, expected to lose at the home of the best team in Germany, but PSG had other ideas.
In an exciting contest that went back and forth from the opening whistle, PSG won 3-2 thanks to a brace from Mbappe on three and 68 minutes, the other goal coming from Marquinhos with 28 minutes on the clock. Three away goals puts them in a fantastic position in the tie and they now have home advantage to help protect their narrow lead.
Munich miss their chance
Bayern Munich entered the first leg as hot favourites to use their home advantage to score a first leg lead, putting themselves ahead before this trip to Paris. Things didn’t go to plan for the Bundesliga outfit, however, and they were undone on their patch by a PSG side who were devastating in attack. Munich now must win on the road and do it convincingly. A 1-0 victory won’t be enough.
Goals from Choupo-Moting and Muller kept Bayern Munich in this tie and offered encouragement to fans. The first leg defeat was unexpected and damaging to their chances of progressing to the semi-finals but the tie isn’t over yet. An early goal for Munich would unsettle the home team and make things interesting. Munich certainly have the quality to go on the attack and score goals but must tighten their leaky defence.
PSG vs Bayern Munich prediction
PSG have their noses in front but it would be foolish of the locals to think the job is done. They are in a fantastic position but if PSG lose an early goal they will then be on unsteady ground. The longer this second leg remains goalless the better for the host so they are expected to sit back and avoid taking any unnecessary risks.
Bayern Munich are up against it here but this isn’t the first time the Germans have been in this type of situation in the Champions League. They know they must win here and have to do it by two or more goals to make it to the semi-final. A huge task but Munich have plenty of talent in their attack and are capable of going close.
Champions League odds
PSG are 2.984 to win with Bayern Munich 2.15 and the draw 3.94.
